Right, what I was getting at was to bring the system back up in "normal" 
mode, then run a conversion utility.  That way there would be a defined 
event for the change, but you wouldn't have to maintain several versions' 
worth in kernel space.

I think that for a major upgrade of several version this would be 
acceptable, but I also think I'd be 2 releases behind current code in a 
production environment.
